How do we keep healthcare ethical? That's what this blog is about.
If you're a fan of medical history, you'll notice that the fight to keep the medicine ethical is a recurrent theme over the past 200 years. Perverse incentive structures arise on a generational timeframe. Each generation of providers is challenged by threats of systemic immoralities.
Whether the quack factories of the 1800s, the poisonous products of patented medicines, the corrupt medical evaluations of corporate physicians, the profiteering of patient dumping, or the current trends of private equity, there has been a constant and ongoing struggle to deter corruption and immoralities within the healthcare industry. Our current challenges of insurance denial, corporate medicine, and exploitative healthcare reflect the ongoing cycle that have been a part of our industry from the beginning.
So again, how do we keep healthcare ethical? Let's talk through it. Perhaps by looking at how we've won these battles in the past, we can gain insight on how to win today.
Cheers,
Benjamin J. Blow, M.D.
